The Youth are making great use of

our kitchen! After participating in a

homework/study group, they prepare

 meals each Wednesday night

and serve between 21-29 people an

AMAZING dinner! The new format

of studying, preparing dinner,

eating and enjoying fellowship is

a success! The Youth will even be

helping set up for Soup Suppers

each week and preparing one of the

soups that will be offered. GREAT

JOB! Thanks also go to Derrick

and Helen Davis who are our new

Youth leaders.

Thanks to your Youth for the wonderful Christmas service.

The Spirit Choir and Youth Group sang carols and taught the

congregation the true meaning of giving in their Christmas program

on December 12.

Our own Jenny Kearley wrote the original script that was

used for this special program.

They also worked as elves at the Santa’s breakfast on December 18 at the Alpine Community

Center when gifts were given out by Santa to dozens of Alpine children in need this

year.

A Special Welcome!
We have a new face in church! Welcome to Gyehyeon “Tim” Hwang, 15, is
from South Korea and is spending this school year with Bill and Joan Waterworth.
Tim’s father is a pastor at the Korean Christianity Presbytery Church
in So. Korea, just 200 miles from the Chinese border. He plays piano and
participates in the band while attending Granite hills this year. Listen and
watch closely in church – Tim will occasionally be playing the piano when the
candles are being lit on Sunday mornings!

Spotlight on Jennifer Kearley

While we are all familiar with Jennifer Kearley
and her involvement in the church, as acolyte,
VBS helper, Youth group member, choir and Spirit
choir member, she has also recently been honored at
Joan MacQueen Middle School. This past spring,
the school held an essay contest about patriotism
for the 8th grade class...and our Jennifer was one
of four students who won! Because of her outstanding
essay, Jennifer and the other three students were
asked to read their speech at the National Cemetery
in Arlington, VA. She helped to place a wreath at the

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during
the changing of the guard ceremony. Congratulations, Jennifer!

                                        Youth Group News

While the Youth group is not meeting
on Wednesday nights this summer, they
still get together! They recently took a
road trip up Interstate 5 and spent the
day at Knott’s Berry Farm. Eight kids
and four adults had a great day!

Congratulations!

Gloria and Frank Powers were long time members of our church.
When Gloria passed away, she left a legacy for providing a scholarship
to a deserving high school graduate who was a member of our church.

This year, the scholarship was awarded to Katie MacKenzie, who
will be graduating from Steele Canyon High School this next week.

Katie is the granddaughter of long time member Chris MacKenzie and the
daughter of Bruce and Kim MacKenzie. Katie has had quite a time graduating
on time. Her family has moved from Jamul to Florida, to Pennsylvania and
back to Alpine, so she has attended six schools in the past six years. Nevertheless,
Katie is taking a number of AP/Honors classes and graduating with a
3.6 GPA. She has been active in the life of the church, joining the choir and
youth group, and helping with the Spirit Choir. She has also been active in the
Drama Club and Show choir at Steele Canyon.
Katie plans to complete her basic college courses at Cuyamaca, and
wants to take Computer Assisted Design and art classes and then transfer to
a four year college to study architecture. Congratulations to this deserving,
enthusiastic, and talented young lady as she begins a new chapter in her life

The Youth were busy this spring!

They headed to Borrego Springs and a day in the desert during April.

They enjoyed a day of hiking, fellowship and swimming.

They are now busy working on re-modeling the Youth Room.

The Mexican breakfast held on April 11 raised $300, which they plan to use for carpeting.

They also want to remove the unsightly, non-working heaters and install their newly purchased bookshelves.
Look for a whole new look by fall!
Youth Group had a “Pet Night” at their meeting on May 19 and are
planning a Family Food Night, when the kids are bringing a favorite family
food to share on June 2. They are also looking forward to a summer cookout
at the beach on June 27. They won’t have regular Wednesday meetings during
July and August, but plan to see each other Sunday mornings.

The Youth have unveiled new plans to redecorate

their room. A parent, Mark Nielsen, and his

daughter Holly, who attend Wednesday night Youth

Group, recently painted the room. Now our Youth are

determined to replace the worn, dirty carpet. They are planning a Mexican Fiesta after

church on Sunday, April 11 to begin their fund raising efforts. On April 17 they have

planned a day trip to enjoy the spring flowers in Borrego Desert and go swimming. The

Youth also plan to have a snack booth for the Rummage Sale on April 24 to raise money

for the youth fund.

Thanks to our Youth Group, led by May Dyer, for leading the church service

on Sunday, September 27. J. J. and Jennifer Kearley did an excellent job of

giving a sermon on stewardship of the earth and taking care of God’s creation.

The Spirit Choir performed and Ashley Wiley led the Children’s Word.

Scott MacKenzie and Josh Wiley were ushers and acolytes.

The youth also provided coffee hour refreshments following the service.

The Youth group continues to meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 in the Youth Room.

              The Church School enjoyed a

Halloween Scavenge Hunt  on October 25

Sunday school registration is complete and kids are back

in their classes. The Thursday bible study class has settled in

very successfully. Through our Christian education program, we

strive to instruct and accompany our members as they grow in

faith. But Christian education is a lifelong endeavor. The journey

continues on,  and as we travel through life, we seek new horizons

and ask new questions.

Annie Lamott, in her book Traveling Mercies, tells a story her pastor shared with her congregation: “When she was about seven, her best friend got lost one day. The little girl ran up and down the streets of the big town where they lived, but she couldn’t find a single landmark. She was very frightened. Finally, a policeman stopped to help her. He put her in the passenger seat of his car, and they drove around until finally she saw her church. She pointed it out to the policeman, and then she told him firmly: “you could let me out now. This is my church, and I can always find my way home from here.” This is a beautiful metaphor for the goal of Christian Education: no matter where we find ourselves on life’s journey, no matter how rocky or steep the path, no matter how lost we might feel, our church can be our point of reference, the place we can always come to help us find our way home to God. Here’s to another great year of journeying together in faith.
